Biblically, the village of Bethany was identified as being approximately 2 miles from Jerusalem, on the slope of the Mount of Olives. It was in Bethany that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, and was anointed with expensive perfume by a woman. A religious order was founded there by Melisende of Jerusalem in the 12th century. Sibylla, later Queen of Jerusalem, was raised there.
