Secrecy about baby names has been the subject of research. Of the parents who know what name they have chosen for their baby, 71.2 % won’t share that knowledge with others until after the child is born, while 28.8 % do reveal the name. In some cultures, like the Chinese, it’s absolutely forbidden to give away the name. It’s thought to be harbinger of bad luck. The African Masai only name their child when it’s a year old. This gives them time to find a good name that suits the child’s personality.



If you decide to keep the name a secret, but are afraid that another couple you know might pick the same name, only tell them the first letter of the name you have in mind. It’s always handy to keep some alternative names you like in reserve.

Why Katy?

“I already knew at an early stage I was going to have a girl. I didn’t even get around to thinking of a boy’s name. I had always loved Katy as a name. It’s short and sweet. I was already calling her Katy while she was growing in my belly and because I’m not good at keeping secrets I told my mom and a few of my girlfriends. I still think Katy is the most beautiful baby with the most beautiful name!”

Why Rose?

“I think you should keep the name of the child you’re expecting a secret. That’s exciting, isn’t it? It’s nice to share a secret with your husband. Some people were fishing around for the name we had in mind. In my head I always called the baby Steve, but in the end it
turned out to be a Rose!”
